AI Agents for Legal Workflows: Beyond Chatbots to Autonomous Legal Assistants

AI agents that execute multi-step legal tasks — contract review pipelines, compliance monitoring, e-discovery workflows. What's possible now, what's coming, and how to build them.

The shift from search to action

Most legal AI tools today are reactive. You ask a question, you get an answer. You upload a document, you get an analysis. The user drives every step.

AI agents are different. You give them a task — “review this contract against our playbook and flag issues” or “monitor these regulatory filings for relevant changes” — and they break it into sub-tasks, execute them sequentially, use tools along the way, and deliver a structured result. The user defines the goal; the agent figures out the steps.

This is 2026’s biggest shift in legal AI. We’ve been building these kinds of systems for the Denovo AI Engine, where attorneys can assign tasks to AI agents in plain language and get structured results — with quotes, document links, or formatted reports. The move from chatbot to agent changes what’s possible in legal practice.

The most practical application is multi-step document analysis. Instead of uploading one contract and asking one question, an agent can process a batch of agreements: for each contract, extract key terms, compare against the firm’s playbook, score risk, and generate a summary — all without the user intervening between steps.

We built a system like this for a client who needed to analyse the investment activity of 23 firms in a specific industry. Previously, their analyst spent several full workdays on this task. The AI agent — trained to analyse news and public data about company activity — completed it in about 5 hours. Not by being smarter than the analyst, but by executing the same systematic steps much faster.

Compliance monitoring is another strong use case. An agent can watch for regulatory changes relevant to a firm’s practice areas, check whether new filings affect pending cases, and alert attorneys when action is needed. This isn’t hypothetical — it’s a pattern we implement by connecting agents to data sources (regulatory databases, news feeds, court filing systems) and defining rules in plain language about what constitutes a relevant change.

Research workflows also benefit. Rather than a single query-and-response, an agent can execute a full research task: search multiple sources, cross-reference findings, check citation validity, identify conflicting authorities, and compile a structured memo. The Denovo AI Engine supports this pattern — attorneys write rules in plain text and the system follows them, using databases like CourtListener alongside the firm’s internal knowledge.

A legal AI agent typically has four components. The planner interprets the user’s task and decomposes it into steps. For “review this lease against our commercial real estate playbook,” the planner might generate: extract parties and key dates → identify all obligation clauses → compare termination provisions against playbook → check insurance requirements → score overall risk → generate summary.

The tool-use layer gives the agent access to specific capabilities: document parsing, vector search, web retrieval, structured data extraction, calculation. Each tool is a bounded function the agent can call as needed.

The memory layer tracks what the agent has done, what it’s found, and what remains. This prevents duplication (don’t extract clauses twice) and enables backtracking (if risk scoring reveals a missing provision, go back to extraction to confirm).

The output assembler structures the agent’s work into a useful deliverable — a risk report, a comparison table, a research memo, a flagged-items list.

For orchestration, we typically use lightweight agent frameworks — sometimes LangGraph, sometimes custom orchestration logic depending on the complexity. The key is keeping the agent’s behaviour predictable and auditable. Every step is logged, every tool call is recorded, and the user can inspect the agent’s reasoning chain.

Where to be cautious

Legal AI agents carry risks that simple chatbots don’t. When an agent executes a multi-step workflow, errors can compound. A misidentified clause in step 1 leads to a wrong comparison in step 3, which produces an incorrect risk score in step 5. The user sees only the final output and may not catch the upstream error.

The mitigation is checkpoint verification — intermediate results that the user can inspect before the agent proceeds. For high-stakes tasks (e.g., due diligence on an acquisition), we design agents that pause for human review at critical junctions. For lower-stakes tasks (e.g., routine contract triage), the agent runs end-to-end and flags items for review only when confidence is low.

Audit trails are essential. Every step the agent takes must be logged and inspectable. This isn’t just good practice — under the EU AI Act, it’s likely to be a legal requirement for high-risk applications.

Getting started with agents

If your firm already uses an AI research tool or chatbot, adding agent capabilities is an incremental step, not a new project. Start with a single, well-defined workflow — “review NDA against our standard template” is a good first candidate. Build the agent to handle that workflow end-to-end with human review at the output. Measure whether it saves time compared to the current process. Then expand to additional workflows based on what works.

Budget for agent development depends heavily on workflow complexity. A single-workflow agent (e.g., NDA review) can be built in 4–6 weeks for $25K–$50K. A multi-workflow platform with configurable agents is a 3–6 month project at $80K–$200K.
