Plan Your Sunset

Estate planning in plain English, with an AI assistant grounded in New York law.

Overview

Most American adults have no will. Not because they don't care, but because the process feels impossible: a single consultation with a New York estate attorney costs hundreds of dollars, the forms are full of jargon, and the rules change from state to state. Families find out what was wanted only when it is too late to ask.

Plan Your Sunset sets out to fix that for New York first. People draft a will, a power of attorney and a healthcare directive from attorney-reviewed templates, with a first draft in one sitting, free for simple estates. Around the documents sits the rest of the plan: the financial decisions they depend on, a vault for the things heirs will need, and a vetted attorney or financial advisor when the situation calls for one. We built the platform behind it: the web app, the iOS companion app and the marketing site.

What makes it different

Larry, Sunset's AI assistant, is a translator, not a lawyer. He helps people fill templates that licensed New York attorneys have reviewed; he never writes a legal document from scratch. Users can ask any question, highlight any clause for a plain-language explanation, or prepare questions for their attorney. When Larry needs facts, he searches New York law and Sunset's own Learning Hub and shows the sources he used. The retrieval runs on the same service we built for Edtek Chat.

Privacy is built into the AI pipeline. Names and other personal details are masked with Microsoft Presidio before any text reaches a language model, and restored only in the answer the user sees. If masking fails, the request stops rather than sending raw data. Prompts can be tuned at runtime without a release, and the platform works with OpenAI, Anthropic and OpenRouter.

What we delivered

  • Estate documents. Guided forms for a will, a power of attorney and a healthcare directive, with a live preview of the document as it is filled, signing instructions, and import of details from documents the user already has. Templates live in the database with per-state configuration.
  • Larry. Document Q&A, highlight-and-explain, attorney preparation and cited answers from the knowledge base, with conversations that recover if a stream is interrupted.
  • Money roadmap. A guided financial journey that sets out what to do next, from retirement accounts and insurance to beneficiary designations and the New York estate-tax cliff, with linked accounts and projections. Assets and marital status stay in sync with the will in both directions.
  • The vault. Documents and instructions are encrypted on the user's device before upload; Sunset never sees the password. Appointees unlock the vault together, and the owner is notified first.
  • Attorneys, advisors and heirs. A shared, encrypted workspace with the client's draft, questions and video calls, plus a guided experience for executors and heirs when the time comes.
  • iOS app and marketing site. An iOS companion app built with Expo, and planyoursunset.com with its guides and New York landing pages.

The result

Sunset is live at planyoursunset.com for New York residents, with the will, power of attorney and healthcare directive available today and trusts on the way. It shows how we approach regulated consumer AI: the model explains and assists, licensed professionals own the legal substance, and personal data is protected before it reaches any model.
